Credit score repair in South Africa
Want to fix your credit score? Start with the reasons behind it.
Separate correcting data from rebuilding financial behaviour - then work through a practical, prioritised plan with realistic expectations.
Is it a report error or a score concern?
These are two different problems and they need different responses. A report error is information on your credit record that is inaccurate, outdated or wrongly attributed - it can be queried and possibly corrected. A score concern is that your score is lower than you would like because of accurate information - payment history, balances, applications or a thin file.
Correcting an error can help, but it will not turn accurate history into a higher score on its own. An assessment of your credit information can help distinguish possible data issues from questions that need a different kind of support.
Understand the payment information first
Payment history is usually the single biggest influence on a score. Before doing anything else, begin by checking whether payment information is accurate, rather than assuming every missed payment can be removed. If a missed payment was reported correctly, it is accurate history; if it is wrong, it may be queried.
Beyond accuracy, the pattern matters: paying on time, every time, is the most reliable way to strengthen a score over the long term. No shortcut replaces consistent, on-time repayment.
Practical steps to work through
Check your report for errors
Review accounts, balances, statuses and payment profiles for anything inaccurate.
Query inaccurate entries
Dispute wrong information through the bureau or creditor, with evidence.
Pay on time, every time
Consistent on-time payment is the strongest long-term score factor.
Keep balances manageable
Lower utilisation relative to limits generally helps a score.
Avoid repeated applications
Multiple applications in a short period can work against you.
Give it time
Accurate history ages off over the permitted period; rebuilding takes time.
Before disputing an application entry, understand the limits of challenging authorised enquiries- valid applications cannot simply be deleted on demand.
Buying a car? Work through the checks before another vehicle-finance application without treating a score as an approval guarantee.
Where debt review is recorded, work through the applicable debt-review process rather than treating the indicator as a score-only problem. Improving a score does not itself end an arrangement or guarantee credit approval.
Why different scores need context
Different bureaus can produce different scores for the same person. They may hold slightly different information, weigh factors differently, or use different scoring models. A difference between two scores is not automatically an error.
When two scores differ, compare the account information behind different scores instead of relying on the numbers alone. The data explains the difference far better than the scores do.
